Overview

A genuine José Ramírez 1a — the primera, the workshop's first-class concert model and the instrument that defined the modern Spanish guitar. Designed by José Ramírez III in the 1960s and made famous on the world's stages by Andrés Segovia, the 1a is the benchmark against which Spanish concert guitars are still measured. This example was built in Madrid in 1975 (serial Nº 8764), during the celebrated golden era of the Ramírez workshop, and pairs the warm, complex, dynamic voice of a Western Red Cedar top with the depth and projection of rosewood. Fifty years on, it has opened up beautifully and remains in immaculate, all-original condition — accompanied by an independent luthier's inspection report.

Condition — immaculate, independently inspected

This guitar has been exceptionally well cared for and presents in immaculate condition. Per the independent inspection (Berg Guitars):

  • No cracks to the top, back or sides
  • Soundboard, back and headstock face flawless; lacquer finish excellent
  • Fingerboard and frets show no wear
  • Bone nut and saddle in excellent order; bridge, tie-block and glue joints perfect
  • All structural elements (fan bracing, harmonic bars, back braces, neck and scarf joints) sound
  • Original tuning machines, functioning well
  • Sole cosmetic note: a single light scratch on the lower bout (bass side)

Acoustically: clear, even open-string response, no buzzes, no wolf tones, all notes ringing freely.

Setup & playability

Currently set up with a slightly higher action (a thin spacer sits under the saddle). The action can be lowered to player preference for easier playability — the inspecting luthier confirms this adjustment is straightforward. As with any vintage cedar-topped instrument, it is happiest kept humidified.

Ideal for

The serious player or collector seeking an authentic golden-era Ramírez concert guitar — a true 1a with the tone, pedigree and provenance to match, in a condition rarely found fifty years on.
